Name: Garrett Hawke
Age: 30s
Canon: Dragon Age II
Canon Point: Post game

Personality:

At a glance, Garrett comes off as a sarcastic, carefree person. He seems very easy-going and this is...mostly true. Hawke does have a humorous view on life and with good reason. It's how he's learned to cope, since his life hasn't exactly been the easiest. By not taking things too seriously, Hawke can keep probing questions at bay, while he works out how he's feeling. And when he's ready to talk, he will. So you'll very rarely find Hawke without a sarcastic reply.

But this is not the whole of him.

While Hawke still has and will probably always have sympathy for his fellow mages and the plight they all share, Leandra's death at the hands of an insane blood mage has really left a sour taste in his mouth. Before this, Hawke was willing to help all mages, no questions asked. But now, he is much more wary of blood mages. Merrill is perhaps the only exception, because she is Merrill and the worst she could do was make frowny faces. He is direct with them and often aggressive if he feels like he needs to be. He doesn't like being this way, but he also doesn't like the idea of losing anyone else he cares about.

Despite this, Hawke is not a particularly angry or violent person. He doesn't necessarily go out looking for fights; He fights only when he needs to, to protect himself or his friends. Or if the job he's on calls for it. Even though Hawke complains about it (quite frequently in fact), he does what he can to help the people in Kirkwall. If he gets paid for it? Awesome. If not? Well that's usually okay too. It isn't always about the coin.

As for his merry band of misfits, Hawke loves them all as if they were his family and treats them as such. Even if they don't always see eye-to-eye on things, they know they can rely on him to help them out, unless it is clearly a bad idea (looking at you, Anders).

Background:

Garrett is the oldest child of Malcolm and Leandra Hawke. Born in Ferelden, Hawke spent a good portion of his childhood wandering with his parents all over Ferelden for reasons he wouldn't understand until he was much older. Some time later, Leandra gave birth to twins, named Carver and Bethany. The family continued to move thorought Ferelden before eventually, settling in a tiny mudhole village called Lothering.

The little family lived in Lothering for quite a while. Malcolm trained his mage children, Hawke and Bethany all the while. Teaching them magical techniques and ways to resist temptation from demons and ways to avoid detection by the templars. Malcolm was sadly taken from the family about seven years after settling in Lothering. Though heartbroken, his family continued to carry on, with responsibility falling on Garrett.

As an apostate mage, Hawke was limited in what he could do to care for his family. But he did the best he could to keep the everything together and to keep Bethany and himself out of the Circle's grasp.

Not like that mattered, because 3 years later, the Fifth Blight hit, leveling Lothering, and forcing the Hawkes to flee.

And this is where Hawke's story begins. The game officially opens up with Hawke, his mother, and siblings fleeing from the Darkspawn horde. After a bit of discussion, Leandra suggests the family travel to her hometown of Kirkwall in the Free Marches. Not exactly the best place to go, considering the were a lot of templars in Kirkwall and they were vigilant about dragging apostate mages to the Circle. Leandra was adamant, however. Her family was highly regarded and there was an estate. So Kirkwall was the destination.

A little ways up the road, the Hawkes see a woman beating the crap out of some darkspawn with a templar at her side. Hawke and co. of course have to help out. Once they were safe, introductions were made. The woman, Aveline Vallen and her husband Ser Wesley were also refuges fleeing the horde. After reluctantly agreeing to allow the templar to travel with them, Aveline joins the party and they continue on toward the Kocari Wilds.

On the way, the group was attacked by an ogre. In an effort to defend their mother, Bethany is crushed and killed by the beast. The remaining travelers kill the ogre before the Hawkes mourn for Bethany. Leandra seemed to be hit the hardest by the loss, even blaming Hawke for allowing Bethany to charge off alone. Unfortunately, time was not on their side. They had to move on before more darkspawn showed up. Which of course they did (surprise, surprise!).

Things couldn't possibly get any worse right? Well considering there was no end to the horde, I'd say yes. Yes it could. That is, until a dragon swooped out of the sky and burned all of the darkspawn to a nice toasty crisp. The dragon then took the shape of an old hag who talked too much named Flemeth.

Flemeth eventually agreed to help Hawke and co. get to Kirkwall if they would do something for her in return. She gave Hawke an ammulet and instructed him to carry it to a clan of Dalish elves camping near Kirkwall. Hawke agreed and Flemeth kept her word (though not before telling Aveline she had to kill her husband who was now suffering from the corruption caused by the Blight).

A little while later, after arriving in Kirkwall, the group was forced to wait outside the city in the Gallows. The templars, under Knight-Commander Meredith's orders, had shut the city down and were turning away refugess left and right.

Leandra's brother, Gamlen, eventually finds them and reluctantly informs them that the family's fortune and prominence were no longer available to them. But he did have two contacts who were willing to help. For a price. Hawke and Carver would have to work off the debt for a year. With no other choice, Hawke met with Gamlen's contacts. Meeran was the head of a mercenary band and Athenril was a smuggler. Well, Hawke wasn't interested in becoming a murderer right off the bat, so smuggling it was.

After their year was up, Hawke realized their fortune still hadn't changed. They were still holed up in Gamlen's tiny shack in Lowtown. They were still penniless. And the templars were starting to dog Hawke. They needed coin and status to hide behind, lest Hawke was dragged off to the Circle. Fortunately, a dwarf named Bartrand was funding an expedition into a place crawling with darkspawn called the Deep Roads.

Bartrand wasn't hiring humans though and turned Hawke down, even after Hawke offered to buy the man a drink. Luck was on Hawke's side though, because soon after he meets Bartrand's brother, Varric who suggested Hawke become Bartrand's business partner. Once again, with no other options, Hawke agreed. Along the way, Hawke managed to collect a band of merry misfits, including a blood mage named Merrill, an escaped slave named Fenris, a former pirate captain named Isabela, and of course Aveline, who had joined the city guard. 50 sovereigns later, Hawke and his never ending family were ready to venture into the Deep Roads. Varric was, of course, going. Carver was brought along to avoid the conflict it would cause. And the last person was a former Grey Warden and fellow mage named Anders, brought along because of his familiarity with the Deep Roads.

Everything was going just fine and dandy, right up until an ancient thaig and an idol made of pure lyrium was found. Handing the idol over to Bartrand was a mistake, because he never intended to share the profits with Hawke or his brother Varric. So he locked them in a thaig and left them there. It didn't matter, though. Further in the cavern, the group find a fortune of their own AND a way back to the entrance of the Deep Roads. Unfortunately, Carver had fallen ill, the corruption coursing through him. He would've died a slow and painful death had it not been for Anders' suggestion. He thought there might be Grey Wardens nearby and the only cure for the corruption was to become one.

There was no other choice. Hawke refused to lose his brother like he had lost his sister. So he dragged Carver to the Grey Wardens and convinced them to take his brother.

Skip three years, Hawke had used the money he earned from the expedition to buy back his mother's family home. They finally moved out of Gamlen's hovel and into Hightown. Hawke had the coin and the status to stave off the templars. And they even recieved the good news that Carver had thankfully survived. But things weren't all sunshine and rainbows.

Tension was mounting in the city. A group of Qunari had landed in the city three years prior and was causing quite the uproar in the Chantry, especially since once devout Chantry-goers were starting to convert to the Qunari way life called the Qun. Viscount Marlowe Dumar called on Hawke to deal with the problem. Hawke agreed and did his best to mediate the situation without making it worse.

Being at the center of this hot button issue didn't stop Hawke's personal problems. One night, Gamlen informed Hawke that Leandra had not shown up for their weekly visit. Concered, Hawke put the Qunari business aside to search for his mother. He managed to track her to a foundry in Lowtown. He was, however, too late to save her from her fate. Kidnapped by an insane mage, Leandra was killed and her face necromance'd onto a corpse to complete the mage's 'wife'. Devesated and enraged, Hawke killed the man responsible and then his mother died in his arms. Hawke was heartbroken.

He mourned for his mother, by throwing himself right back into the mess with the Qunari. He managed to find out the real reason for the Qunari's continued presence. A companion of Hawke's, the pirate Isabela, stole an important tome from them and they had chased her to Kirkwall to recover it. Well they found it. But Isabela ran off with it. The tension had reached a breaking point after that and it finally culminated in the Qunari going all out on Kirkwall.

Hawke faced the Qunari leader, called the Arishok, in the now dead Viscount's keep. Isabela returned a short while later and returned the tome to the Qunari. But the Arishok was not satisfied. He wanted the thief too. Hawke refused to hand her over and at the suggestion of the Arishok, they dueled over her. Hawke was the victor at the end of an intense battle.

The Arishok was dead. Hawke was Kirkwall's new Champion and now perhaps the most important person in Kirkwall.

Skip another 3 years and we find the Circle's First Enchanter, Orsino, speaking out against Knight-Commander Meredith. Since Viscount Dumar's death, Meredith had effectively stepped into his position and put a stranglehold on the mages in Kirkwall. They of course rebelled under the pressure. Which only made her squeeze them tighter. Not to mention people were starting to whisper about how Meredith had lost her mind.

Hawke stumbled upon the argument and was asked to pick a side. And since Hawke was the Champion and all, it was obvious his opinion mattered. Hawke refused to pick a side and told them to wrestle over who was right. It was obvious this issue wasn't going to go away, but Hawke didn't want to get involve. He really didn't.

But like so many times before, Hawke wasn't really given a choice. The conflict between the mages and the templars seemed only to intensify as the days passed. And then one day, Anders was acting weird. He asked Hawke to help him gather some sinister sounding ingredients and then help him infiltrate the Chantry undetected. Hawke helped him gather the ingredients, naturally. But when it got down to the Chantry bit, Hawke refused. He didn't know what Anders was planning, Anders wasn't talking, and so Hawke wasn't down with it.

Hawke later uncovers a conspiracy plot lead by a templar named Thrask, a man he met after his first year in Kirkwall. Thrask and his co-conspirators kidnapped Hawke's brother in hopes of persuading the Champion to join them and their cause, or at the very least keep him from fighting them. Instead, the mage Grace wanted to kill Carver and then Hawke himself for his involvement in the death of her lover six years earlier. Hawke ended up fighting with these people to free his sibling. Carver thanked Hawke and returned to the Grey Wardens.

Eventually, Orsino summoned Hawke to the Gallows, stating Meredith was out of control and accusing the Circle of harboring blood mages. Hawke answered the call and once again refused to take sides when asked. Orsino was outraged at Meredith's accusations and threatened to bring the Grand Cleric, Elthina, into the mix. That's when Anders spoke up. The Grand Cleric could not help them now. And why was that?

Well because Anders Blew Up The Chantry.

Everyone was in shock. And Meredith, being the big bag of crazy that she was invoked the Right of Annulment, that is, every mage in the Circle was to be killed, even though they had no part in Anders's scheme. Once again, Hawke had to choose. Help the templars slaughter innocent mages. Or defend the mages against the templars.

Hawke didn't want to be involved. He didn't want to be anywhere near this situation. But he knew what he had to do. He couldn't help Meredith kill innocent people. This was Anders' doing and he would have to carry that burden alone. Meredith stalked off, leaving her templars to handle the Champion and his companions. They made short work of them, before turning on Anders. Hawke was angry and hurt that Anders could not trust him enough to tell him this, even after all their years of friendship. The others watched, probably expecting Hawke to plunge a knife in the mage's back. Instead, Anders found Hawke's hand on his shoulder. "Help me defend the mages." Yeah, Anders had made a stupid decision. But Hawke wasn't his judge nor his jury. He wasn't going to decide Anders fate.

The fought their way to the Gallows where they helped to defend the mages from the approaching templar army. Along the way, Hawke and Carver reunited and Hawke was happy to have his brother at his side once more. Once the first wave of templars were cleared out, it was obvious Orsino had lost all hope, despite Hawke's support, gone bonkers. He absorbed the dead mages using blood magic and became a monster named a harvester. Hawke and Co. fought and killed it.

Now it was time to deal with Meredith. The final showdown took place in the Gallow's courtyard, the very same ground where Hawke's life in Kirkwall began. Meredith was indeed crazy. Bartrand, who was driven crazy by the idol, had sold the blighted thing to Meredith, who had it turned into a sword. So that explained why Meredith was off her rocker. Hawke and whole bunch of other people, companions included, fought Meredith right up until her sword turned on her and turned her into a statue.

After exchanging a glance with Meredith's second-in-command, Hawke and his companions left and vanished. And that was the last time anyone ever saw the Champion of Kirkwall.

Abilities:

Hawke is a mage. He is well versed in elemental magics: he can perform fire blasts, ice blasts, and summon up a firestorm. He's also familiar with primal magics, which control earth and sky. He's able to cast earth based projectiles, rework the ground to petrify an enemy, as well as calling up rock armor. He knows a few spirit spells that can shake a person to their core and arcane spells that can crush them under telekinetic force.

Most importantly, Hawke has two areas where he specializes. He is a force mage and a spirit healer. As a force mage, he is able to use gravity against an enemy. Using Fist of the Maker, he's able to lift something or someone and slam them back down forcefully. A spirit healer is what it says on the tin. He can heal wounds, but death isn't something he can fix, unfortunately.

Inventory:

Mantle of the Champion which is a full set of armor and Orsino's staff, the Staff of Violation.

Which PIC?: Brass Embassy

...The 'likes of me'? Stop you're making me feel special.

[This is obviously the tailend of a conversation Hawke is having with the man in the suit. He's chosen the Brass Embassy's communicator. Something about 'masters' doesn't sit right with him. Not that 'Brass Embassy' sounds any less sinister. But if he had to pick...

Oh well. At least he was out of Kirkwall.]

Is this supposed to be the sequel? "The Adventures of Hawke Part Two: The Never Ending Story Only with Less Darkspawn and Blood Magic. I Hope." Do I get to ride off into the sunset on a horse? I'd rather have a dragon, honestly. Though, it doesn't matter, I suppose. I'm still excited and I'm not even pretending this time. Can't wait to see all the fun ways you plan to kill me.

Sample Prose Entry:

Hawke had been hoodwinked! Bamboozled! Flimflammed, even! That was the story he was sticking too, anyway. Because how in the world does the Champion of Kirkwall get himself lost? Quite easily, it seemed. Next time, Hawke was going to reconsider buying a map from an Orlesian.

Hawke twisted the map around. Now back the other way, head tilting while he bit into his apple. If he was reading this correctly, then he should be...right where he was. Damnit. Okay. There was absolutely no reason to panic. So he wasn't anywhere near civilization. He could look on the bright side. No templars. No Circle. No Darkspawn trying to kill him.

Things were looking up already!

There was no reason to keep looking at that map, really. It wasn't telling him anything useful. So he'd take a break for now, eat the rest of his dinner and try to read it again later. Maybe after a nap. Naps were always useful.

With his belly full, Hawke yawned and settled back, with his hands planted behind his head. Maybe he could blaze a path to Denerim. Or Rivain. Rivain was supposed to be lovely this time of year. He'd figure out his destination soon. His eyelids were heavy.

It's the screeching halt of the train that jolts Hawke awake. He sits up, reaching behind him for his staff. He had just shut his eyes for a minute, who had the time to take him?

The doors slide open and Hawke approached cautiously, staff drawn. And of course he's met with a man in a suit. Hawke, tightened his grip on his staff, but there's a smirk on his lips. "Don't you look perfectly untrustworthy?"
